ELEVEN

Hali’s annoyance with the shifters grew to the point where she debated evicting them from the tables and stools at her bar. The only problem was they were buying a lot of alcohol and tipping well. Other than that, they were annoying.

“You don’t look as if you’re having fun,” Victor noted as he leaned against the tiki bar counter and looked Hali up and down. Krull had left an hour before—said something about having business to attend to—but Victor stubbornly kept hanging around.

“I’m tired,” Hali replied. That wasn’t a lie. She was exhausted. Her hip was killing her, but she refused to show it in front of the shifter posse. “Speaking of that, we’re closing.”

Victor flicked his eyes to his phone screen, no doubt checking the time, Hali assumed. “It’s not even nine o’clock yet.”

“It’s five minutes before nine, and we’re closing at nine.” Hali wasn’t in the mood to play around. “It’s the middle of the week. We don’t stay open late on weekdays.”

“That is disappointing,” Victor noted. “Perhaps I should talk about this with Franklin. He might value my opinion.”

That was the last straw for Hali. It had been hours of dealing with these people, and she was over it. “Knock yourself out. This is my bar. I own it. Just because it’s located on Franklin’s property, that doesn’t mean he gets a say in how it’s run. If you want to continue drinking, you have multiple options. May I suggest the beach bar? It’s a five-minute walk that way.” Hali pointed for good measure. “Now, get out.”

Rather than acquiesce—or even pick a fight—Victor grinned. “You’re unbelievably hot. How about I help you close down the bar and then we can go upstairs and have a drink in my room together? We can discuss how hot you are.”

The way he smiled at her told Hali he honestly thought that was a possibility. “I’m good,” she said on an eye roll.

“I have the penthouse,” he sang out.

Did he honestly think that was an enticement? Hali didn’t know whether to be offended or annoyed. “I don’t really care. If you’re looking for someone who does care, again, the beach bar is your best bet. It’s stuffed to the seams with women who will jump at the chance of having a penthouse to sleep in.”

“I don’t want those women.” Victor made a face. “I want you.”

“You don’t want me either,” Hali replied.

“Of course I do. I’ve seen you in action. I want you more than anything.”

Hali had to force herself to remain patient. It took effort, though. “It takes a specific sort of man to be able to handle a woman like me,” she said reasonably.

Victor beamed at her.

“You are not that man,” Hali added. “Just … no.” She shook her head and turned and found herself face to face with the one man who could handle a woman like her. “Where have you been?” she demanded when she found Gray smiling at her.

“And a happy hello to you, too,” he said on a laugh as he leaned in to give her a kiss.
